One of the largest and oldest flint mining sites in Europe with thousands of mine shafts
The archaeological site of Spiennes, recognized by UNESCO in 2000, is one of the largest and oldest flint mining sites in Europe with thousands of mine shafts over an area of 100 hectares. Discovered in 1867, this site is a testimony to the activity of the oldest miners in the world: Neolithic man had put in place techniques for extracting huge flint slabs weighing up to several hundred kilograms, as well as cutting techniques recognized as a testimony to human genius. The Interpretation Centre project aims to preserve and enhance this heritage. Visitors can explore the site on the surface and discover a museum space on the excavation area to better understand the life of our ancestors, through archaeological objects, reconstructions and the use of technological supports. Finally, the highlight of the visit is the descent into a real Neolithic mine at a depth of 9 metres.
