Elevator authorizing the passage of barges and allowing the completion of the link between the Scheldt and the Sambre.
110 m high and 135 m long on a hectare of land, a total investment of 625 million euros, 20 years of work, two 112 m long and 12 m wide ferries suspended from 144 cables 8.5 cm in diameter, each ferry lifts 8,200 t. into the air at a speed of 20 cm per second for 6 minutes. The principle used for this elevator completes the link between the Scheldt and Sambre rivers, allowing the passage of 1,350 t barges.

Impressionnante pièce d'ingénierie! Cet ascenseur se voit de très loin mais on ne se rend vraiment compte de sa taille que lorsqu'on se trouve à son pied. Possibilité de visiter la salle des machines.

Merci pour votre appréciation. Attention : vous pouvez voir en effet la salle des machines depuis le 8ème étage, mais pas la visiter, pour des raisons de sécurité.

Excellente option avec accompagnement d'une guide sur l'ensemble de la visite . Cela vaut le détour car cet ouvrage d'art est unique et véritablement impressionnant. Les anciennes installations donnent une très bonne idée du bond en avant réalisé. La visite s'est terminée par la visite du musée et un repas dans la cafétéria au sommet de l'édifice.
