ST. PIAT'S CHURCH
Scaldian Gothic building dedicated to Saint Piat, with a Gothic choir and a Romanesque nave in Tournai
The Scaldian Gothic edifice dates from the 12th century, but its origins go back even further. Excavations have uncovered a 6th-century Merovingian basilica beneath the building, and a 4th-century Christian burial site. The site is said to have been dedicated to Saint Piat, Tournai's first Christian missionary, who was charged with evangelizing the peoples of northern Gaul and was beheaded by the Roman army. The building has a Gothic choir and a Romanesque nave. Chapels are dedicated to Notre-Dame d'Alsemberg in the north, and to Saint Hubert in the south.
