VAL-DIEU (ABBEY OF)
Abbey founded by a group of Cistercian monks, the church with Renaissance stalls of the Cistercian abbey of Liège
The abbey was founded in 1216 by a group of Cistercian monks from Hocht, near Maastricht. While most of the buildings have survived to the present day, the abbey church, which partially collapsed in 1839, was rebuilt after the French Revolution. The church contains magnificent Renaissance stalls from the Liège Cistercian abbey of La Paix-Dieu. Classical concerts are organized in season. Next door to the abbey: a religious art store and an award-winning craft brewery that follows the recipes of the Val-Dieu brewery-monks!
