BLEGNY-MINE
Site testifying the exploitation of coal in Blegny with permanent exhibition, 2 shafts are preserved there, one always in service
The site, classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2012 (along with Bois du Cazier, Bois-du-Luc and Grand-Hornu) bears witness to coal mining in this region. In the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the coalmines enjoyed their golden age, playing an essential role in the industrial development of the entire Mosan basin. The decline did not begin until the 1950s. The last colliery in Liège, Blegny-Trembleur, closed in 1980. It is now a living witness to the memory of the miners. The interest of the site lies in its original conversion into a tourist area and place of remembrance, and in the preservation of two shafts from different eras (19th and 20thcenturies ). The most recent, still in use, offers an impressive immersion in the world of the "gueules noires". Descend into the shaft via the mine shaft between 30 and 60 meters below ground, and explore the underground galleries, the size, the noise of the machines and the work of the men. After returning to "daylight", you'll follow the coal's journey through the coal washing and sorting facilities... The complete cycle from extraction to sale. Your ticket also entitles you to visit the permanent exhibition "Working underground", as well as the slag heap biotope and the tree circuit, which presents life on and around the slag heap (self-guided or audio-guided tour).
Other activities: tourist train ride, playgrounds, mine-golf, brewery, small animal park.
