COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST
Collegiate church founded in 981 by Notger, a place of meditation appreciated by the bishop, houses a Romanesque tower and a beautiful cloister
Founded as early as 981 by Notger, this church was a replica of Charlemagne's Aachen Cathedral. It was the bishop's favourite place of recollection, and he chose it for burial in 1008. The building survived until 1754, when it was razed to the ground and replaced by the present neoclassical building. Only the Romanesque tower has been preserved, but it is now in danger of collapsing. The present church has a beautiful cloister.
