Castle of the Middle Ages dominating the valley of the Vesdre, village reflecting the medieval architecture with the Arvô old city hall
Castle. During the Middle Ages, three small states emerged in the region that today forms the territory of the province of Liège: the Abbey Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy, the Episcopal Principality of Liège and the Duchy of Limburg. The castle was built at the beginning of the 11th century when a certain Frédéric built a remarkable stronghold on a magnificent rocky spur overlooking the valley of the Vesdre, the castle of Limbourg. The apogee of the duchy is when the political weight of Duke Henry III extends beyond the limits of his small territory. This will then be integrated into Brabant and then, through alliances and inheritance, into the Burgundian possessions. Renowned as an impenetrable fortress, it was besieged by the greatest war captains in history: Henry IV of Germany in 1101, the Princes of Orange in 1577, Alexander Farnese in 1578, the Claw of Condé in 1675 and the Duke of Malborough in 1703.
Village. What remains of this adventure is this fortified promontory and a splendid little village limited to a single street where you can breathe all the architectural richness of the Middle Ages. These architectures of medieval structure offer a pleasant walk out of time while dominating the Vesdre valley. Special features: the 15th century church of Saint-Georges and the Arvô, the former town hall which has become a place for exhibitions. You can enjoy them in the rare shops selling delicious cinnamon pancakes.
