The Malmédy carnival, known as Cwarmé, is one of the most picturesque in Belgium. It begins on Saturday at midday and lasts until Mardi Gras at midnight. The highlight is the procession on Sunday. The Cwarmê has 15 main characters who are only seen on Sundays. The most emblematic, the "Haguètes", immobilize their victims with a "happe-chair" so that they ask for forgiveness. The "long-noses" tease passers-by, who sometimes buy them a drink to get rid of them. Four days of popular jubilation, at the end of which the Haguète is burned.
