This large territory is two-thirds forested. It has a very rich historical and cultural past. German is spoken in nine communes. In Malmedy and Waimes, French is spoken. There are traces of prehistoric and Roman occupations. Abbeys were founded here as early as the 12th century. Castles also appeared here.
Following several conflicts, in 1831, Belgium established three districts: Eupen, Malmedy and Saint-Vith. After further conflicts with Germany, these structures became definitively Belgian in 1925. The German cultural community became the German-speaking community in 1983-1984. It includes: Eupen, Saint-Vith, Amblève, Bullange, Bütgenbach, Burg-Reuland, Eynatten, Lontzen and Raeren. Malmedy and Waimes are geographically part of Wallonia and culturally part of the Wallonia-Brussels Community.
In 1344, zinc ore was mined in the vicinity of La Calamine. In the 15th century, the ore was mined in Eupen, drapers in Malmedy and then in Eupen and potters in Raeren. The architecture evolves with modern times, dams are built and the nature reserve of the Hautes Fagnes is born in 1957. This nature reserve, the largest in the country, is a jewel and fascinates nature lovers. The beauty of the landscapes and the local gastronomy make the region famous.
