MALMUNDARIUM
Museum and much more, the tourist and cultural heart of Malmedy, with spaces dedicated to history, art and culture
The Malmundarium is the city's tourist and cultural heart, nestled in the former monastery. It's much more than just a museum! The spaces dedicated to history, art and culture are well worth a visit. It all began here in 648, when the Benedictine monk Remacle and a few of his confreres settled in the wilderness. The French Revolution sounded the death knell for the principality, putting an end to 1,100 years of religious life within these walls. Throughout history, however, the monks were assigned to a wide variety of missions. First the French army, then the Prussian regime in 1815 and the German regime in 1870 used the buildings.
The current buildings, dating from the early 18th century, have been magnificently restored and are now listed. You can visit the cloister and attic, accessible by elevator. The museum tour (audioguides, audio-visual terminals and video) takes in the leather workshop, the paper workshop, with vat manufacture on request, and the Cwarmê workshop, the Malmedy carnival. Also worth seeing are the cathedral treasure and the historium, a journey through 14 centuries of history. Temporary exhibitions, events, activities and guided tours are organized here. Visits are made interactive and fun thanks to game cards and amusing questionnaires. The municipal library team offers a varied program of educational activities for schools. A must-see in the region.
