The remains of the fortress of Vergy lords are now covered by vegetation. Imagine that the building, deemed impregnable, had 14 towers! At the end of the 12th century, Vergy family rebels against his lord, the Duke of Burgundy. They were supported by the King of France who obliged the Duke to lift the siege of the fortress. That was still 18 months that he was besieging the places, in vain! As often, the reconciliation of the feuding families is realized by a marriage: Alix de Vergy married Eudes III de Bourgogne. So, the fortress and the lands come into the ducal domain in 1199, and became part of the royal domain, like all French Burgundian possessions, at the death of Charles the Bold, in 1477. Source of conflict and Catholic League during the religious wars, the castle just like many others in Burgundy, was destroyed at the dawn of the 17th century, by order of Henry IV. From the stone mastodons, the base of Saint-Denis tower, two wells and the church are still visible. Not far away, there are the ruins of the Saint-Vivant abbey, priory founded in 890. Here, the panorama of Hautes-Côtes magnificent.
