AMBIORIX STATUE
Large statue of Ambiorix including a bronze eagle of 32 cm and 5 kg in Tongeren
Ambiorix was a brave Gaul who defied Caesar in 54 B.C. This large statue was erected in 1866 by French sculptor Jules Bertin and included an eagle on Ambiorix's right foot. In the 1970s, drunken students broke the 32 cm, 5 kg eagle while climbing the statue, and took it away unnoticed for decades! The bronze eagle reappeared when a historian took an interest in it and spoke at a conference about its disappearance. The investigation traced the eagle back to the house of a former student... then aged nearly 70!
