Medieval fortification in Tongeren, with a small free museum about the history of the walls
In the 2nd century, the Romans protected Tongeren with thick walls 4.5 km long. In the Middle Ages, the city acquired more substantial ramparts, built partly on the Roman walls and punctuated by six gates. One of these, the Moerenpoort (1379), or Visée Gate, houses a small museum (free of charge) on the history of the ramparts. Climb to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Near the beguinage, the Drapiers tower was also part of the city walls.
