BASILICA OF ST. HUBERT
A building built between 1526 and 1564, the basilica of Saint-Hubert
Although the current building was constructed between 1526 and 1564, the first foundation dates back to the early 7thcentury . During the reconstruction, the 13th-century towers were retained. They were incorporated into the new classical façade in the 18th century. Visitors entering the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul for the first time are struck not only by its majesty and elegance, but also by the contrast between the somewhat heavy Baroque façade and the slender Gothic interior. Particularly noteworthy are the primary Gothic towers (15th century), the Baroque façade (15thcentury ), the Baroque side altars of the Rosary (left) and St. Agatha (right), the magnificent stalls evoking the lives of St. Hubert and St. Benedict, and the altar of St. Hubert (right transept). The latter features a reliquary containing Saint Hubert's holy stole and relics of Saints Lambert and Floribert. The crypt was restored after 1525. Today's walls and vault ends bear witness to the original foundation. In 2016, the religious edifice was unwillingly thrust into the spotlight, as members of the church fabric were caught digging a tunnel beneath the basilica in an attempt to recover supposed relics of Saint Hubert... The patron saint of hunters has been the subject of pilgrimages for almost 500 years, but it is not known whether he is buried here.
