FREYR CASTLE
Renaissance style castle, with a French garden, located on the edge of Meudr and at the foot of the rocks in Hastière
Splendid complex including a Renaissance-style castle and French gardens, Freÿr has the official nickname "Belgian Versailles". Its location on the edge of the Meuse and at the foot of the rocks, surrounded by a beautiful dense forest, gives the former summer residence of the Dukes of Beaufort-Spontin all its photogenicity. The whole thing is really majestic. Outside, you can admire the oldest orangeries in Belgium and their trees three hundred years old, while the plantations form a six-kilometre maze. A real treat for the kids. The refined interior style calls upon various trends and influences: Renaissance, Rococo or Baroque, reflecting the splendour of the past. This former ducal residence has been furnished by the twenty generations who have lived there to this day. Of course, there is no lack of anecdotes here: for example, it is said that the fireplace trim in the dining room is said to have arrived from Picardy... on foot! We also know that Louis XIV stayed there: during the summer of 1675, the Sun King forced Jeanne d'Harscamp to take him in while he laid siege to Dinant. He discovers the four wings and the monumental baroque porch. The castle of Freÿr hosts each year several cultural events: music, painting history... Lastly, the panorama "opposite" - the rocks of Freÿr -, accessible by taking the national road in the direction of Beauraing, also deserves the trip. It is a well-known site for climbing enthusiasts.
