SITTANAVASAL CAVE
Ancient Jain monastery carved into the rock and featuring frescoes in a cave, painted with natural dyes
This very ancient Jain monastery (2nd century B.C.) carved in the rock has exquisite frescoes in a cave, which date partly from the 7th century A.D. Painted with natural mineral and vegetable dyes, they represent notably a pond with lotus flowers, scenes of daily life with people dancing, flowers and animals: elephants, buffaloes, ducks, fish... Unfortunately these murals have suffered from the ravages of time. All around, you can see prehistoric cemeteries.
