TABO MONASTERY
A Buddhist monastery founded in 996, a complex with temples housing beautiful murals and stucco statues.
Tabo is known for its Buddhist monastery, the oldest in the Spiti valley. Founded in 996, this ochre-colored complex houses 9 temples in which one can admire superb wall paintings and stucco statues dating from the 9th, 14th and 15th centuries. You will also see 23 chörtens, the room of the monks and that of the nurses. In the morning around 6 am, you can attend the puja which takes place in the new monastery. The ceremony lasts about 1 hour. 15 km from Tabo, the Gyu Gompa contains an intact 500 year old lama mummy. Impressive!
