TABO CAVES
Caves dug out by monks, with murals dating back to the century, used as meeting places and winter shelters.
Around the village, about thirty caves shelter murals dating from the 9th century. These caves were dug in the rock by monks. They were used as meeting places and shelters during the harsh winters. This has earned the village the nickname of Ajanta of the Himalayas, (in reference to this city in Maharashtra, famous for its Buddhist caves containing magnificent paintings). All around, multicolored prayer flags and chörtens (monument containing the ashes of lamas) are scattered in the nature.
