THE OLD GREAT NORTH ROAD
Road built between 1825 and 1836 by convicts to find examples of well-preserved masonry: bridges and walls.
Between 1825 and 1836, 720 inmates were employed in the construction of this road, which extended 264 km from Sydney to the Hunter Valley settlements. There are exceptionally well-preserved examples of masonry, including several bridges and retaining walls up to 12 meters high. The Great North Road was little used and even abandoned in favor of the Coastal Highway as its construction neared completion. Only 43 km have remained relatively intact. This section has been named The Old Great North Road.
