NHI KHE VILLAGE
A village specializing in woodturning, where all the craftsmen master the process to obtain the highest quality sound.
About 20 kilometres south of Hanoi, Nhi Khe is a craft village specializing in woodturning. For centuries, craftsmen have been producing objects for religious use (incense burners, incense censers, candleholders...) or used in the musical arts, in particular the mo , a wooden instrument (ideally the heart of jackfruit) partially hollowed out and carved, often in the shape of an animal (frog, fish...). The mo is used in Buddhist funeral rites, during religious ceremonies or during puppet shows on water. All the talent of the craftsmen lies in their ability to master the process of hollowing out the wood to obtain a sound of optimal quality. In addition to wood, Nhi Khe craftsmen also work with horn, bone or stone. They have been able to adapt to the new market requirements by mechanizing part of the production (generalization of the electric lathe which replaced the pedal lathe) and by diversifying their production beyond traditional objects: car seat covers made of wooden balls, statuettes, chess sets, balusters... Moreover the village is the cradle of Nguyên Trai (1380-1442), politician, writer, poet, and one of the historical figures of the country. His statue is enthroned in the middle of the village park. The communal house hosts the traditional village festival on the 25th day of the 10th lunar month. Nhi Khe is a pleasant getaway just a few minutes from Hanoi. There are agencies in the capital that offer guided tours.
