The Corentyne (or Corantijn) River is the country's longest and forms a natural border with Guyana. It rises in the Acarai Mountains to the south and flows down some 724 km to the Atlantic Ocean. This waterway was the means of communication between Nieuw Nickerie and Apoera, with ships carrying granite and lumber. These waterfalls are well worth a visit: Wonotobo Falls, Frederik Willem IV (Anora) Falls and King George VI Falls are all on the Corentyne.
