LA CRYPTE D'ALLUY
The crypt houses a series of wall paintings dating from the early century
The crypt of the church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul conceals an often little-known masterpiece: a group of mural paintings from the early 14th century. This jewel of the Middle Ages was rediscovered during the construction of a new apse for the church in the 19th century. It was included in the list of historical monuments in 1985. The crypt is located under the front choir of the church and is accessed by a small staircase. The decoration accompanies the visitor as the faithful in his advance, from darkness to light.
Three levels of simple decoration make up a procession: the abundance of figures carrying candles reminds us that this dark and underground place is dedicated to light. Two scenes are dedicated to the crucifixion (east wall) and to Christ triumphing over death. In order to preserve the frescoes, it is requested not to stay longer than 10 minutes.
