Moiwana is a small black-brown village, and if you're travelling between Albina and Moengo, ask to stop at its monument to the 39 civilians killed on November 29, 1986 during the civil war (1986-1990). This is a work by Marcel Pinas: over an area of 1.6 hectares, the artist has placed 39 separate blocks to represent the victims of the massacre. This massacre is an important part of Surinamese history, which saw the black-brown survivors seek refuge in camps on the other side of the border, in French Guiana.
