An imposing 45-meter statue of Guru Padmasambhava stands on the hill of Samdruptse. Visible for miles around and overlooking the valley, it is the largest statue in the world of the man Tibetans call Guru Rinpoche. This eighth century Buddhist master is the founder of Himalayan Tantric Buddhism. He is considered as a second Buddha by the members of the Nyingmapa current of Tibetan Buddhism. From the top of the hill, on a clear day, you can see Darjeeling, Kalimpong, the east of Nepal. Access possible by cable car.
