MISSISSIPPI HEADWATERS
Itasca State Park trail to Lake Itasca, headwaters of the Mississippi River, Wilderness Drive and past Douglas Lodge
Following a trail, you cross a small river... the Mississippi. When you reach its source (Lake Itasca), it's hard to believe that this one-metre arm feeds the "Father of Waters", which rumbles all the way to Louisiana. The game is to jump from one stone to the next, so you can say "I walked across the Mississippi"! After that, you can continue along the road, which becomes Wilderness Drive and loops around the park, skirting Lake Itasca, before returning to the east entrance. This takes you past Douglas Lodge, the park's historic lodging.
