IGLESIA SANTA MARÍA DEL NARANCO
Church with Byzantine medallions and a Roman pool in the basement
This church hides the only existing 9th century civil building in Europe: a small palace erected in 842 for King Ramiro I, who gathered his court here to discuss political issues. The 32 medallions, in Byzantine style, are the visible face of cylindrical beams used to consolidate the load of the vault. All in all, constructive solutions that would not be found again until 150 years later with the late Romanesque. In the basement, notice the Roman swimming pool.

Luckily, photos seem to be allowed inside, although nothing explicitly reported us on this subject. And as the weather is bright and photos of this place that caused much enthusiasm in me are quite successful.
The sculpted and incised architectural details are also perfect symmetry and bear witness to an inspiration combining visigothic memories, arabic influences, early Christian art and innovation romanesque.
