SACRO MONTE DI CREA
Famous sanctuary on a hill with a basilica and 23 chapels
Sacro Monte di Crea, one of Piedmont's most famous sanctuaries, is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It comprises a basilica and 23 chapels that rise from a hill. The entire complex, although altered several times, dates back to the 12th century. The dedicated basilica features a grandiose Baroque façade built in 1735. Following Napoleon's suppression of religious orders (1811), the Sacro Monte fell into ruin. Restored in 1889 and in 1972, a regional law established the Sacro Monte de Crea Regional Nature Park in 1980.
