PARQUE DE LA FAMILIA & PUERTA DEL DIABLO
Quiet, pleasant site with numerous children's play areas, the Puerta del Diablo and the Casa del Escritor.
Families will appreciate the calm of the groves, a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of the capital. Numerous playgrounds will appeal to children, but walkers will be disappointed. You can, however, come here for a bite to eat and a pleasant time out. The property is said to have belonged to the Renderos family in colonial times, hence its name: Los Planes de Renderos.
Puerta del Diablo. Legend has it that the family's daughter was courted by the devil, and the parents decided to chase him away. One night, the devil was pursued by the whole community. On the verge of being caught, he smashed a rock, which stopped the chase. Today, the site is known as Puerta del Diablo. It's a viewpoint overlooking two gigantic boulders suspended above the void, forming a kind of natural gateway to the horizon: located on the crest of the Asuyatepec or Loma Negra mountain, at 1,131 m above sea level. It offers a beautiful view of San Salvador, Lake Ilopango, the San Vicente volcano and the Pacific Ocean, and provides a good introduction to the capital's geographical configuration: cerros de San Jacinto, de Guazapa and Nejapa. To get there, walk 1 km past Parque Balboa.
La Casa del Escritor - Museo Salarrué. Shortly before the entrance to parque Balboa, you can visit La Casa del Escritor-Museo Salarrué. On display are manuscripts, photographs and sculptures by the great Salvadoran artist.
