VOLCÁN DE SANTA ANA
The highest volcano in the park at 2,365 m, with a crater that allows you to admire the beautiful lagoon that has formed.
The Santa Ana volcano, or Ilamatepec in the local language, rises to 2,365 metres. Still active, it last erupted in 1904: at the summit, you can smell the clouds of sulfur and admire the beautiful turquoise lagoon that has formed in the crater. It may be the highest volcano in the park, but it's also the easiest to climb.
Getting there: From Santa Ana, take the 7:30 a.m. bus to the corner of avenue Fray Felipe de Jesus and 11a calle Poniente. The journey takes around 2 hours, and the bus drops you off at the park entrance, where guides are waiting to accompany you. You'll have to pay US$3 for the guides and US$6 for the park entrance.
The climb: there are three sections, the first in the forest, the second in sparser vegetation. The last part is more rocky and technical, and is exposed to the sun. No major difficulties, however, and people of all ages and fitness levels reach the summit. Remember to take water (at least 1 liter per person), small snacks and a cap or hat to protect you from the sun. Take your time and admire the magnificent view of the Izalco volcano along the way. At the top, the lagoon awaits you... as well as a surprising Popsicle vendor - a well-deserved reward!
Return: allow around 3h/3h30 for the ascent and descent. The circuit is designed to enable you to catch the bus back to Santa Ana at the park entrance, which theoretically runs at 1pm (but usually around 1.15/13.30pm).
