KATAHDIN IRON WORKS
Historic site in the middle of the Maine forests preserving the ruins of a coal furnace and a blast furnace
In the middle of the forests of Maine, on the edge of a small lake, lies this historic site. It preserves the ruins of a charcoal kiln and a blast furnace, dating from 1843. At that time, more than 20 tons of iron were produced here every day, which attracted a small community of 200 people who settled here for a time. Today there is almost nothing left of this past, except the story told around the ruins. A small explanatory panel with a black and white photo, however, gives an idea of the place in the 1880s.
