MOOSEHEAD LAKE
Large Maine lake 40 miles long and 20 miles wide offering many outdoor activities in all seasons
The area's main attraction, Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine, with 200 miles of shoreline. 40 miles long and 20 miles wide, it's almost a small sea! It gets its name from its moose head shape. Outdoor activities are numerous in all seasons both on and around the lake: boating, fishing and hunting trips, canoeing, rafting, elk watching, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing. Hiking in the forests around the lake is also a particularly enjoyable activity. One of the trails goes around the lake from the west to Mount Kineo, while the trail around the lake from the east leads to Kokadjo camp. If you want to immerse yourself completely in the Maine wilderness, there are several options around the lake to spend the night. These include the Moosehead Family Campground, which includes tent and RV sites.
A paved road runs along the south side of the lake. From Greenville, you can drive up Route 6 to Rockwood, on the left bank, about 15 miles away. This town is the ideal starting point for the crossing to the Kineo Peninsula. If you choose the right shore, the road will take you to Lil Bay State Park along the lake. If you plan to drive around the lake, there are a number of trails and logging roads to follow. It's best to have a 4x4 car and a very good road map or an effective GPS.
