SOUTH NAHANNI RIVER
Canadian Heritage River, managed by Parks Canada, is the common thread of major attractions in Nahanni National Park.
The Nahanni River originates in the Selwyn Mountains in the Mackenzie Mountains. It was declared a Canadian Heritage River in 1987 and is managed by Parks Canada. The scenery is breathtaking and fog often covers the high peaks of the surrounding mountains. The South Nahanni River, which meanders south of the park, is the thread of the main attractions: majestic canyons, sheer cliffs, unforgettable waterfalls (the famous 90-metre-high Virginia Falls), hot mineral springs, tumultuous rapids (Figure of Eight).
