CEA - CENTRO EXPERIMENTAL AMAZÓNICO
The Amazonian Experimental Center has missions of conservation and research on the Amazonian fauna and flora
The Amazonian Experimental Center is located 8 km from Mocoa, on the road to Villagarzón. It is a natural reserve of 132 hectares belonging to the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Southern Amazon (Corpoamazonia). The CEA has missions of conservation and research on the Amazonian fauna and flora, but also an educational mission, of which the Suruma Park is a part. "Suruma" means "tapir" in the Inga language. It is the emblematic animal of the region, of which some specimens can be seen frolicking at the entrance. In this park, we collect and care for wild animals taken from the hands of species traffickers. The aim is to release them (the animals, not the traffickers!) into the wild, when their condition allows it and when they have reappropriated the means to live far from human presence (this is not the case for all unfortunately). The animals are kept in cages for the time of their recovery and are well treated. Guacamayas, monkeys, tigrillos, jaguar, anaconda, turtles, pirarucu... are distributed in several stations, where professional guides explain the way of life and the history of each animal. An interesting visit whose entrance fees help to run the center, which is funded mainly by the Cali Zoo Foundation. The latter supports several educational and research programs throughout the country to preserve the extraordinary biodiversity of Colombia.
