Naumkeag House AND Gardens
Shingle style manor house which can be visited with a guide, extremely famous for its gardens in Stockbridge
This surprising mansion belonged to Joseph Choate, his wife Caroline and their five children. Choate, a prominent lawyer in New York City, where he spent most of his time, had this second home built in 1886. Naumkeag was designed by the New York architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, which was highly regarded at the time. Built in the Shingle style, typical of New England architecture, the mansion comprises 44 rooms. A guided tour (departing every hour) brings to life the glory days of this impressive mansion with a wealth of anecdotes. In addition to the common rooms and bedrooms for family and guests, you'll also find access to the attic, where maids and children took refuge. Men, on the other hand, were housed close to the kitchen, on the first floor, as promiscuity between people of different sexes was unseemly at the time. The furniture, objects and works of art are of the period and, for the most part, genuinely belonged to the Choate family. Naumkeag Manor is also extremely famous for its gardens, which extend over 3 hectares and can be freely explored. To help you find your way around, a map with explanations of the various landscaped areas will be given to you at reception. An edifying visit to get a glimpse of life in the Gilded Age. It's like hearing Gatsby and Daisy's laughter spread through the trees...
