BEREA COLLEGE HISTORIC CAMPUS
Berea College is a remarkable th century architecture and beautiful green space. While guided tours are organized daily by Berea College Visitor Center, it is possible to discover the campus by yourself, including a brochure available at the same reception centre.
Founded in 1855 by ardent abolitionists, including John Gregg Fee (1816–1901), Berea College was the first interracial and mixed college in South. Firmly rooted in its historical role and Christian values (its motto is «God has made all the peoples of the earth one blood»), it admits students mainly from the Appalachians enjoying few resources. As such, the teaching it provides is free of charge. Berea College allows the preparation of diplomas in 28 different fields (history, science, language, culture, music, arts, politics, computer science…). Its general education promotes understanding of kinship among all, promotes services to communities in the Appalachians and beyond, as well as sustainable economy practices to conserve natural resources.
Berea College provides students with alternating work-study cycles. Employment opportunities range from service staff to Boone Tavern Hotel, which depends on university, lighting management at local theatre, other tasks such as household maintenance, building management, support for teaching, green space maintenance, or woodworking and weaving. These work cycles have helped to extend and support the practice of traditional Artisanat crafts, and to make the city a centre of arts and craftsmanship.
