ST. LAWRENCE BISHOP'S CHURCH
This 12th century Romanesque church from the Nivernais region overlooks the Loire.
The 12th century Romanesque church of Nivernais, the church of Saint-Laurent-de-Béard, anchored on its promontory, dominates the Loire. 31st site of the "Federation of Clunisian Sites", it is therefore recognised as a stage in the "European Cultural Itinerary on the Way of St. James of Compostela". In pure Burgundian Romanesque style with some of the characteristics of the priories dependent on the monastery of La Charité-sur-Loire, "the eldest daughter of Cluny", its cross plan is composed of a single nave, a projecting transept and a main axial apse forming the heart. A beautiful dome on trumpets at the crossing of the transept completes the ensemble, and its harmonious proportions are a sign that originally they respected the golden section. It is illuminated in summer.
