Stone Mountain is a mountain of granite located in Stone Mountain Park, a huge natural and recreational park located about 30 km east of Atlanta city centre. It measures more than 8 kilometres of circumference and its peak reaches 251,50 metres above the plain. It is known mainly for its immense bas-relief on its northern face, which represents three great southerners heroes of the War of Secession: the President of the Confederate Jefferson Davis, and the generals Thomas Jonathan Jackson (said Stonewall) and Robert E. Lee. Begun in 1916, the work was completed only in 1972, after three artists were present for its realization. Located about 120 metres from the ground, it is 30 metres high and 60 metres wide. It is the greatest of its kind in the world.
The Stone Mountain Park features attractions, restaurants and a gondola to reach the top of the rock. In summer, a laser show illuminates the impressive masterpiece. A campground is located on the edge of the lake and many hotels are available in and on the outskirts of the park.
