THE NEEDLE DAM
Rare dam built in 1837 to create a reservoir and feed the canal in the event of low water levels at Biches.
Located on the Nivernais canal, between locks n° 21 and n° 22, the Fleury needle dam was built in 1837 in the commune of Biches to supply water to the canal. This structure is a rarity since it is one of the last 12 needle dams of the Nivernais canal and one of the 124 still existing in France. Its purpose was to create a reservoir to supply water to the canal in case of insufficient water level. Nearby, a 19th century pavilion houses the controls of the sluice gates. A pleasant place of leisure, conducive to daydreaming!
