A centenary tradition, this traditional and annual feast commemorates the eruption of the El Playón volcano in 1658, which forced the villagers to flee Nixapa to Nejapa in the face of fire balls that sprouted the Earth's den. The reputation of the "boules of fire" attracts frissons researchers since the animation of this celebration wants to cast inflamed rags. So you can attend as a spectator or participate… but it's not safe! The celebration starts with a music festival and when the night falls, the spectacle of the fire balls can finally begin!
Participants in this party play with wet balls in kerosene for one month. They are made with rags (muletas) surrounded by wire. The show is impressive. Players are actually throwing the balls as if it were a football match… We recommend the utmost caution in the assistance to avoid touching you with a ball of fire! In 2004, heavy rain did not stop the impetuosity of young people and, despite water, the balls continued to burn.
