GRUTA DAS TORRES
The largest known lava tunnel in the Azores and Portugal, and one of the ten largest in the world.
Located at 285 meters above sea level in the Cabeço do Bravo area, south of Madalena, Gruta das Torres is classified as a "regional natural monument" and is part of the Pico Natural Park. Discovered in 1990, it is the largest known lava tunnel in the Azores and Portugal (around 5,150 metres long), and one of the ten largest in the world. Equipped with helmet and torchlight, we set off to explore around 500 metres of the tunnel - the rest being reserved for scientists. Guided by our guide's invaluable explanations, we observe pretty lava stalagmites and stalactites, striated walls and lavic structures, each very different from the next, all in deep darkness and soothing silence: to avoid altering the character of the site, no human artifice has been used. Among Pico's 80 or so volcanic cavities, this one is certainly worth a visit. Gruta das Torres is an example of the sustainable use of a natural resource for tourism purposes, and above all for raising awareness of environmental protection. The visit is carried out with the utmost respect. The cave is absolutely fabulous, and for the duration of the visit (1h to 1h30), you'll feel a bit like an explorer! It's a magical moment, like being suspended in time. This activity is ideal for families. Remember to book at least the day before, as places are limited. And make sure you're properly equipped: good walking shoes, vest, rain jacket...
