This gate, composed of a section of wall and two massive towers, is the only vestige of the rampart built by Louis XI.
Today, the Porte Notre-Dame is the only vestige of the rampart built by King Louis XI at the end of the 15th century, after his victory over the Duke of Burgundy, before being redeveloped in the 16th century. This entrance to the old Château-Chinon houses, at its center, a section of the surrounding wall with an archway overlooking Rue Notre-Dame (hence its name), as well as two massive towers topped by slate roofs. Stop in front of this gate and you'll see for yourself a superb testimony to the town's rich historical past.
