LE CANAL DU NIVERNAIS
The construction of the Nivernais Canal was begun in 1784 and completed in 1843. The aim was to link the two basins of the Loire and the Seine for the transport of wood to Paris. Along 180 km, it begins its journey in Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, and completes it in Auxerre. To supply it with water, two ponds were created at the end of the 18th century siècle : the Baye and Vaux ponds. Considered one of the most beautiful canals in Europe, the Nivernais Canal is now entirely dedicated to pleasure boating, and the Baye and Vaux ponds are known for their extraordinary ornithological wealth. During the cruises on the Nivernais Canal, you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape and pass three tunnels, including the famous La Collancelle tunnel, along 760 m, then the beautiful Echelle de Sardy structure with sixteen consecutive locks. Discovery trails, with educational terminals and observatories, allow you to discover the fauna and flora of the surrounding sites.
