La Marginal in Luanda is taking its great airs every year for the carnival. Thirty-eight groups of the capital marched in March 2014, dancing and singing with semba rhythms, to win one of the prizes from 3 000 000 to 400 000 AKZ!
The groups are preparing for it for many months because it is extremely competitive.
The city's inhabitants dress, sing and dance. For three days, the city lives in the colours and rhythm of the carnival. It's the party in the Bay of Luanda! In 2014, it was the 37 th edition in this form. The first carnival was celebrated in 1867. His origin would even be much older and went to a feast in honour of a king king. Between popular traditions and religious practices, carnival is a tribute to Angolan culture.
Carnival is a celebration of identity. National identity. Urban identity. A celebration of youth. The lyrics of the songs express the daily Des with their difficulties, their activities, their hopes, etc. Often political and sometimes critical also. It was repeatedly banned before independence, and the disobedient participants were severely punished.
The carnival, with its long preparations and rehearsals, is taken very seriously in Angola.
Lobito, Cabinda and Lubango are among the other carnivals, outside that of Luanda.
