The memorial was inaugurated on 6 February 2002 by the President of the Republic, José Eduardo Dos Santos, 85 years after the disappearance of King Mandume in 1917. The visitor must preferably deposit tree leaves on the king's tomb before gathering. The guard can indicate on which tree the trees draw.
