PUNNATHUR KOTTA
Former raja palace located 3.5 km from the Vadakkunnathan temple and now home to 64 captive-bred temple elephants
3.5 km from the Vadakkunnathan temple is the home of the temple's 64 elephants, housed in a former raja's palace, the Punnathur Kotta. Every morning at 9 a.m., the pachyderms line up to receive their breakfast, a sight well worth seeing. If the sight of elephants in captivity is a little hard to take, you should know that this animal has always played a leading role in the practice of Hinduism. In fact, the Animal Welfare Board of India keeps a close eye on the treatment of temple elephants.
