MARTVILI MONASTERY
Mingrelia's most important monastery, housing a church with preserved frescoes and traditional icons inside.
It is the most important monastery in Mingrelia. The foundations of the Church of the Virgin date back to the 7th century, but its current structure dates from the 14th century. Martvili was the episcopal pulpit of the Georgian Orthodox Church until the Russian conquest. Fourteenth- and seventeenth-century frescoes once covered the entire church. Some of them are still preserved, depicting kings, nobles and donors alongside traditional icons. The monks have partly renovated the church and its esplanade, to the detriment of its historical authenticity.
