After the WFP cyclone in 2015, the runway was damaged by jumbo jets carrying international aid. The runway is being refurbished with the help of China and the airport is modernizing its equipment, some of which is being financed by France. Qantas and Air New Zeland have suspended their flights pending the resurfacing of the runway (ongoing). Other international airlines such as Aircalin and Virgin continue to be affected. Once arrived, several solutions are possible to get to the city:

Taxi. There are them every day, every hour of the day. It will cost you between 1,500 VT and 2,000 VT to reach the city centre or the surrounding area. Be careful, they often do not have a meter and tend to inflate prices. However, at the exit, a table specifies the official rates for each hotel to which you can refer.

Shuttle bus. There are private carriers. The advantage is that the price is fixed in advance and someone is waiting for you.
We recommend Evergreen Vanuatu (✆+678 23 050); Atmosphere Tours & Transfers (✆+678 27 870) or Adventures in Paradise (✆+678 25 200). These companies therefore ensure the transfer from the airport to your accommodation (and vice versa). Remember to call them the day before.

Bus. These are these small vans with a capital B on the license plate. It is the most popular means of transport in Vanuatu. It may take a few minutes, but it doesn't cost more than 150 VT per person to reach the city centre or the surrounding area.

Transfers. Check with your accommodation in Port-Vila, in most cases hotels and guest houses offer a transfer system with a fixed rate and often the same or cheaper than taxis.

License plates. In Vanuatu, the main specific plates are as follows: T = taxi. B = collective minibus. CT = Collectif Transport is the pick-up trucks that carry passengers, especially in the other islands. H = rental vehicles (H as hire). POL = police. GV = government. VMF = army (Vanuatu Mobile Force).
