MISHUTUSHKIN & PILIOKO ART GALLERY
A little away from Port-Vila at the entrance to the Erakor lagoon, in a surprising property, the Gallery & Foundation Michoutouchkine and Pilioko is a very special and timeless place. Nicolaï died in 2010 and Aloï Pilioko continues his personal work and brings Nicolaï's work to life. One can only be surprised, almost disoriented when arriving, a visitor tells us:".... The palm trees in the entrance are painted yellow, the cars are colored as would be paintings, the boxes are unexpected with pieces of art in the open air... ". Pilioko's paint shop in the background remains a work shop, next to the pool painted yellow and decorated in many ways. The house, made of wood on two floors, is in honour of Nicolaï's works, with various collections and the most unexpected finds. The master of the place is an artist par excellence: everything is colour, the dominant yellow, and evoked shapes highlighted with pastels with a mischievous charm not always immediately detectable. In this place, which was also a focus for intellectual encounters, it becomes difficult to name things, so much everything is intertwined: plant, local architecture, objects from Oceania, paintings, collectibles, gifts received and placed on a table.... A little nostalgia, though, when listening to Aloï talk about Nicolaï. A nice visit.
