ARCH 22
This gateway to Banjul, over 35 m high, commemorates the 1994 coup d'état.
Standing over 35 m high, the Arch 22 is the gateway to Banjul. Built in 1996, this monument is intended to commemorate the 1994 coup d'état that deposed David Kairaba Jawar, then president of the country since 1970. Yahya Jammeh took over the country on 22 July 1994 and ruled for 22 years before being defeated by Adama Barrow in December 2016. A few meters away, a large statue of a soldier can be seen. His left hand forms a V for "Victory" and under his right arm he carries a child symbolizing the Gambia saved.
