Kembang Island is located in the middle of the Barito River, not far from the floating markets. The island covers an area of 60 hectares and is the natural habitat of crab-eating macaques and several bird species. Legend has it that the island originated from the British ship Fireworks, destroyed by the inhabitants of Biaju in the 1750s on the orders of the Sultan of Banjar. The debris of the former ship was gradually overgrown by trees and transformed into an island that was then inhabited by a group of monkeys.
